The Harbour Walkway development will provide pedestrian and cycle access to the Temple Island along the north eastern edge of Temple Meads Station, alongside the Floating Harbour.
New boardwalk
A new pontoon boardwalk will extend southwards from the ferry landing stage at Temple Quay, towards Temple Island. This new route will pass under Brunel’s railway viaduct and into Totterdown Basin, a little known green oasis where the Floating Harbour meets the Feeder Canal.
Several of the sites along the route of the Harbour Walkway are currently derelict or undeveloped. The route will link to the new University of Bristol Enterprise Campus, planned on the site of the former Royal Mail sorting office demolished by the council in 2019.
Harbour edge developments
It is anticipated that, over time, these sites will be redeveloped to improve the harbour’s edge, introducing new uses such as cafes, hotels, creative workspace and waterside apartments.
The walkway will be delivered in advance of many of these sites being regenerated and will therefore need to be versatile in order to allow for adaptation to future development proposals.
